FUNCTIONALITY

Consciousness seems to have a very special place within the universe. So what is consciousness and what role may it play within the evolution of reality? Life seems to spread out and convert inanimate matter into itself, increasing in order and complexity. Taking the limiting case, this ends with the entire universe becoming a single super-organism that is composed of all matter. How will this creature maintain homeostasis if there can be no growth, consumption, or excretion? Will its birth be its death, taking the universe with it, perhaps recreating it?
